WHO WE ARE

We are a professional audio mixing and mastering studio, established in 2006, and mixing and mastering full-time ever since.

We will make your music sound expensive (but it won’t cost you too much).

We use a combination of top-grade analogue hardware and carefully selected plugins, with a modern approach.

We have worked on around 18,000 tracks over the last 20 years for record labels large and small, pressing plants, publishers, Hollywood movie trailers, music libraries, sync agencies, podcasters, TV shows, audiobooks, independent musicians…. the lot! Plus we are experienced in audio post-production for Sky TV – so you can trust your tunes are in safe hands/ears.

Our mixes and masters are regularly landing front page of Spotify, heard on major Radio stations and used in TV and films. We consistently meet the quality control of demanding industry professionals, who keep coming back to us for both the sound quality and personal service. Our album mastering gives smooth results & ties a collection of tracks together flawlessly into one cohesive work for all formats. We specialise in pre-vinyl optimisation and have been the “in-house” guy for 3 major pressing plants for 10 years.

Fat As Funk is a proudly independent family business. When you use us, your money does not go to faceless shareholders at major labels, or some automated AI mastering tech company for them to buy another Lambo, but instead goes directly to feeding the kids and positive stuff like that!

Loz is also A&R for a music library (Alternative Reality Music), he has produced music & Sound Design used on major Hollywood trailers (Alien: Covenant, Antlers and Logan), created sonic branding for the All About The Music TV Channel and handled all the audio for their entire season 2 on Sky TV, been an advisor for the New Deal For Musicians scheme, run a record label (Alternative Blueprint), taught A-Level Music Technology back in 2000, ran club nights & DJ’d for years, done live sound engineering, bespoke composition for top-level LA agencies like Pusher, Score A Score and more & been a broker for vinyl & CD manufacturing. Loz has attended numerous music industry conferences in the UK & Los Angeles. We have a broad understanding of the music industry.

HOW WE DO IT

All work is carried out in a large custom-built, carefully acoustically treated and calibrated room, through delicious THXpm3 certified monitors.

All the detail is revealed flawlessly. We have spent a lot of time and effort getting our acoustics just-so. The studio is a hive of absorption, diffusion, reflection and non-modal surfaces. If it’s there, we will hear it.

Your music goes through some of the best analogue mastering hardware in the world from SPL, Bettermaker, IGS and Warm audio alongside carefully chosen software plug-ins, all processed using 64 bit internal summing.

Mixing services are done in a variety of ways depending on the needs of the project, but we run key individual channels through our valve hardware to enrich it with analog warmth and tweak it to perfection. We find a combination of analogue & digital tools give the best results.

We have a small archery range in the garden & Loz practices Zen archery to refresh his headspace between jobs, or when the computer screens get too much! This mind-emptying restores clarity in a hectic day, and gives the best audio results in the end.

“Why pay a human? there are automated services out there that will master my track for almost free!”

Machines don’t have SOUL. Your music does. We do too. Choose a human that you can talk to, who has FELT the joy of music rushing through their blood, who gets an emotional response from music not just cold binary code. Music needs a human touch at all points of the process, especially the final step in crafting the sound! Often these AI tech services lure you in with a free/cheap track but the costs mount up as you want more essential things, or they tie you in to yet another subscription.

Your DAW may have some tools built in already, and you’re already a hardened producer – but it’s no coincidence that pretty much every professionally released record has been mastered by someone outside the immediate production group. Even tracks produced in high-end studios employ different mastering engineers.

Everyone needs a Mastering Engineer with impartial, trained ears, who will take the time to listen to what you want to achieve and the confidence, experience and equipment to make the right decisions to tie all your tracks together and optimize your final sound into one cohesive work.

Even the best producers find themselves getting too close to a mix and losing focus, often ending up tearing their hair out! We offer a mixing service too, so you can get dope sounding mixes and keep your hair on.

Professional mastering is the last artistic step in the creation of a radio-ready, commercial sounding release. It should not be seen as ‘optional’. It brings out all the subtleties in expressive live performance, makes the bass bump & the treble sparkle. Good mastering makes the whole track seem bigger without destroying the dynamic range and tonal balance you’ve worked so hard to achieve in the mix. Magic can be done in the mastering suite.
