We are a professional audio mixing & mastering studio, established in 2006.

We use a combination of high-grade analog gear and carefully selected plugins, with a modern approach.
We have worked on around 13,000 tracks over the years for record labels large and small, independent musicians, music libraries and sync agencies. Plus we are experienced in audio post-production for TV, including Sky TV – so you can trust your tunes are in safe hands/ears.
Our mixes and masters are regularly landing front page of Spotify, heard on major Radio stations and used in TV and films. We consistently meet the quality control of demanding industry professionals, who keep coming back to us for both the sound quality and personal service. The engineer Loz started Fat As Funk in 2006. He has spent a frankly unhealthy amount of time in studios since 1994 & has only ever worked in music-industry jobs (with a bit of A-Level Music Tech teaching 20 years ago).

Loz is also A&R for a sync licensing agency (Rinse The Sync) and FabSong (new MTV style TV show on Sky), he has produced music & Sound Design used on major Hollywood trailers (Alien: Covenant, Antlers and Logan), created sonic branding for the All About The Music TV Channel, been an advisor for the New Deal For Musicians scheme, previously run a record label (Alternative Blueprint), taught A-Level Music Technology back in 2000, ran club nights & DJ’d for years, done live sound engineering, bespoke composition & been a broker for vinyl & CD manufacturing. Loz has attended numerous music industry conferences in the UK & Los Angeles. We have a broad understanding of the music industry.

HOW WE DO IT
All work is carried out in a large custom-shaped, carefully acoustically treated room (properly calibrated with an SPL meter & an RTA), through delicious THXpm3 certified monitors. We have chosen a reflection-free monitoring position design, with a LOT of custom acoustic treatment.
All the detail is revealed flawlessly. We have spent a lot of time and effort getting our acoustics just-so. The studio is a hive of absorption, diffusion, reflection and non-modal surfaces. If it’s there, we will hear it.
Your music goes through class-A analogue tube hardware including units from SPL, Maselec, Warm Audio and TC and the most up to date professional software, carefully chosen plug-ins, all processed using 64 bit internal summing.
Mixing services are done in a variety of ways depending on the needs of the project, but some genres benefit from our classic Onyx analogue desk alongside the flexibility and precision of a cutting edge digital workstation, whereas for others we run individual channels through our valve hardware, having tweaked it to perfection. We find a combination of analogue & digital tools give the best results.
We have a small archery range close to the studio, & Loz practices Zen archery to refresh his headspace between jobs, or when the computer screens get too much! This mind-emptying restores clarity in a hectic day, and gives the best audio results in the end.

Machines don’t have SOUL. Your music does. We do too. Your DAW may have some tools built in already, and you’re already a hardened producer – but it’s no coincidence that pretty much every professionally released record has been mastered by someone outside the immediate production group. Even tracks produced in high-end studios employ different mastering engineers.
Everyone needs a Mastering Engineer with impartial, trained ears, who will take the time to listen to what you want to achieve and the confidence, experience and equipment to make the right decisions to tie all your tracks together and optimize your final sound into one cohesive work.
Even the best producers find themselves getting too close to a mix and losing focus, often ending up tearing their hair out! We offer a mixing service
too, so you can get dope sounding mixes and keep your hair on.
Professional mastering is the last artistic step in the creation of a radio-ready, commercial sounding release. It should not be seen as ‘optional’. It brings out all the subtleties in expressive live performance, makes the bass bump & the treble sparkle. Good mastering makes the whole track seem bigger without destroying the dynamic range and tonal balance you’ve worked so hard to achieve in the mix. Magic can be done in the mastering suite.
