About Fat as Funk

The engineer Loz has been mastering full time since 2004 and started Fat As Funk in 2006. He has spent a frankly unhealthy amount of time in studios since 1994.
Loz has previously taught A-Level Music Technology, ran club nights, been an advisor for the New Deal For Musicians scheme, done live sound engineering & set up a record label. As well as audio work he currently produces experimental music & works in sync licensing.
We take the greatest pride & care in our work, & have a tonne of satisfied clients who recommend us to others and say nice things. We are pleased to state that the vast majority of our clients are regulars, or their friends sent on recommendation.
We approach every job with a craftsman’s approach. We never skimp on effort, never rush a job, & master every track individually with art & precision. Our album mastering gives smooth results & ties a collection of tracks together flawlessly into one cohesive work.
We would love to work on your music too.

All work is carried out in a customised acoustically treated room (properly calibrated with an SPL meter & an RTA), through delicious THXpm3 certified monitors. All the detail is revealed flawlessly.
Your music goes through class-A analogue tube hardware including units from SPL Maselec and TC and the most up to date professional software and digital gear.
Mixing services are done using a combination of our lovely analogue desk alongside the flexibility and precision of a cutting edge digital workstation.
Loz has a small archery range in his garden, & practices Zen archery to refresh his headspace between jobs, or when the computer screens get too much!
We can then either send you the files as a download, as a DDP Image, or as a Redbook specification CD.
We insist on having happy customers. We will leave you feeling glad you chose us.

Or… So why pay a professional? My DAW says it has all I need already!”
Your DAW may have some tools built in already, and you’re already a hardened producer –  but it’s no coincidence that pretty much every professionally released record has been mastered by someone outside the immediate production group. Even tracks produced in high-end studios employ different mastering engineers.
Everyone needs a Mastering Engineer with impartial, trained ears, who will take the time to listen to what you want to achieve and the confidence, experience and equipment to make the right decisions to tie all your tracks together and optimise your final sound into one cohesive work.
Even the best producers find themselves getting too close to a mix and losing focus, often ending up tearing their hair out! We now offer a mixing service too, so you can get dope sounding mixes and keep your hair on.
Professional mastering is the last artistic step in the creation of a radio-ready, commercial sounding release. It should not be seen as ‘optional’. It brings out all the subtleties in expressive live performance, makes the bass bump & the treble sparkle. Good mastering makes the whole track seem “bigger” without destroying the dynamic range and tonal balance you’ve worked so hard to achieve in the mix. Magic can be done in the mastering suite.
After working so hard to craft your tracks; getting the lyrics ‘just so’; the blood, sweat and tears of the recording session; and the painstaking teeth-grinding process of getting the mix to it’s best – why risk wasting all that with an amateur or inexperienced mastering engineer?
We do mixing and mastering all day, every day. We know the art and the science of every genre intimately. We always take the time to do it right – no shortcuts, no compromise, every time.
Our mixes and masters are regularly heard on Radio and used in TV and films. We consistently meet the quality control of the most demanding industry professionals, who keep coming back to us for the sound quality and also the service. We are proud to have built a business around word of mouth and professional recommendation. Check out our client list.
Whether you’re at the top of the industry or just carving your first steps, we can get the best out of your music so you can be totally confident in your sound, & let the music speak for itself.
